The effect of spatially inhomogeneous extracellular electric fields on neurons.

The cooperative action of neurons and glia generates electrical fields, but their effect on individual neurons via ephaptic interactions is mostly unknown. Here, we analyze the impact of spatially inhomogeneous electric fields on the membrane potential, the induced membrane field, and the induced current source density of one-dimensional cables as well as morphologically realistic neurons and d...

Particle self-bunching in the Schwinger effect in spacetime-dependent electric fields.

Nonperturbative electron-positron pair creation (the Schwinger effect) is studied based on the Dirac-Heisenberg-Wigner formalism in 1+1 dimensions. An ab initio calculation of the Schwinger effect in the presence of a simple space- and time-dependent electric field pulse is performed for the first time, allowing for the calculation of the time evolution of observable quantities such as the char...

Improved Approximations for Fermion Pair Production in Inhomogeneous Electric Fields

Reformulating the instantons in a complex plane for tunneling or transmitting states, we calculate the pair-production rate of charged fermions in a spatially localized electric field, illustrated by the Sauter electric field E0 sech (z/L), and in a temporally localized electric field such as E0 sech (t/T ). The integration of the quadratic part of WKB instanton actions over the frequency and t...

Deceleration of supersonic beams using inhomogeneous electric and magnetic fields.

Methods for the production of cold atomic and molecular samples relying on the deceleration of pulsed supersonic beams are described and a review of the corresponding literature is presented. These methods include multistage Stark deceleration, multistage Zeeman deceleration, and Rydberg-Stark deceleration. Recent applications of the cold samples produced with these techniques are summarized.

Deflection of neutral polar molecules using inhomogeneous electric fields

The ability to deflect neutral polar molecules present in supersonic molecular beams using inhomogeneous electric fields is a consequence of these molecules possessing a dipole moment. As a dipole moment is inherently a quantum state-dependent feature, it can thus be exploited to allow spatial separation of neutral molecules in different quantum states. In this report, the Stark interaction was...
